Food and the little things I am loving right now.

I’m a big believer in the small & little things. I have this beautiful little bowl I picked up from kikki.K years ago – it says ‘enjoy the little things’, and is the perfect size for greek yoghurt + fruit. To me the little things make life that wee bit better; the things that make you feel warm and fuzzy on the inside, they are not front page news but they are worthy of a nicely filtered snap on Instagram. If that’s your thing.

I thought I would share a few of the little things that are filling my life right now.

Roast sweet potato.

Growing up I never really enjoyed white potato. I wasn’t a massive fan of mash, I don’t think boiled potatoes were ever on my radar (Mum?), and I was more likely to have lots of gooey roast pumpkin (some things never change) and only one half of a roast potato. I’m not sure when I became acquainted with sweet potato, I’d say since leaving school definitely (… almost 9 years ago). Now sweet potato is a regular in the shopping basket & a regular precooked in the fridge. Sometimes I have it steamed and might quickly panfry it before I eat it (it’s a real yum way), but last week it’s been roasted and it’s almost gooey like roast pumpkin. So much yum. I also love loading them with bolognese sauce, adding it to curry, having them mashed with my pork + fennel meatballs, and in my frittata.

Lemongrass, everything.

I am loving the lemongrass tea I bought at the Kopi Luwak Coffee Farm near Ubud, Bali. Looking back, I’m not sure how I feel about the way the Civet cats were caged up and their poo farmed. Lemongrass tea is a beautiful and sometimes I mix it with ginger. It’s nice in the evening. I also adore my Peppermint Grove Lemongrass & Lime candle – I particularly love lighting this one in the mornings (or early afternoon) when bacon or chorizo has been cooked in the kitchen.

Cheddar cheese & dill pickles.

Such a good combination.  I like to slice the pickle longways, and have it with what every cheddar I have in the fridge. It’s generally when I’m prepping or cooking dinner, and it’s so satisfying.

The one day of the week I know Chris and I will cross paths awake. We cook dinner, together, and watch the previous evening’s episode of Wentworth, and then go to bed together.

Particularly, pumpkin and marinate feta. I become omelette-obsessed during the buffet breakfast situation of my Thailand trip, and after a few fails at home, I watched my balinese breakfast chefs super intently. Now I can master the omelette and it is my everyday breakfast. I have not had porridge for four weeks. It’s such a quite breakfast. I like to make mine with two eggs, a pile of roast pumpkin and a sprinkle of marinated feta. I’ll generally have it with a slice of sourdough or as of last week, reheated roast sweet potato, and I’ll always have some greens. Generally sliced zucchini with either spinach or broccolini or asparagus or beans – what ever is in the fridge. Panfrying the greens does take a little extra time, but it’s worth it for me. I find I am powering through the morning without getting that little grumble in the tummy. Feeling hungry when you’re talking about food can make work really annoying sometimes, haha.

Weekend getaways

Last weekend, we went on a little weekend away to Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills, for our first ever Airbnb experience. We ate cheese, drank wine, played mini golf & watched Netflix in bed (such a luxury). It was nice, really nice.

Grilled zucchini

I normally only use grilled zucchini in this salad. Normally I roast or stir fry; now as I’m getting ready for work in the morning, I like to have zucchini rounds on low heat in the pan and the way they come out is just really yum.

Figgy, the Fiddle-leaf Fig.

I’ve been thinking of getting an indoor plant for quite some time, mainly because I thought one would look cool in one of the seagrass basket’s I bought in Bali. On the weekend I picked up this beautiful Fiddle-leaf Fig plant & I love it. I made a joke of naming it Figgy, because we’ve been really wanting to get a puppy lately.. real bad.

What have you been loving lately?
